Complex Care

Complex care supports individuals with long-term or advanced health needs, often following illness, disability or hospital treatment. While this level of care is traditionally associated with hospitals or care homes, many families now choose specialist complex care delivered safely in the comfort of their own homes by highly trained care professionals.

Who delivers Complex Care?

The NHS serves as the primary provider of complex care. While a significant portion of this care is delivered in hospitals, it is also offered through various other means:

In the individual’s home: The NHS may directly provide care or fund a third-party partner or organization to deliver services based on an assessed need.

In a nursing home: Care is provided in either a nursing home funded by the local authority or a privately operated facility.

In a third-party facility: Care is arranged and funded by the NHS at facilities managed by external partners.

Complex Care Funding

Healthcare in the UK is provided free at the point of delivery. If you have a recognised healthcare need and are receiving care in your own home, you may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding, which is managed and financed by your local Integrated Care Board (ICB).

To explore your eligibility, you should consult your GP, who can carry out an initial assessment and refer your case to the ICB. Following this, a full assessment will be conducted by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to evaluate the complexity of your needs.

Unfortunately, some specialist conditions, such as dementia, are not automatically classified as healthcare needs on their own, meaning dementia care is not always covered by NHS Continuing Healthcare. However, it is still worthwhile to check, as securing this funding can significantly reduce or even fully cover care costs.

If funding is approved, keep in mind that the ICB reviews it annually. Should your needs decrease due to receiving high-quality care, there is a risk that funding may be withdrawn, requiring you to cover the full cost of your care.

End of Life Care

End of Life Care, also referred to as palliative care, focuses on managing pain and other physical symptoms associated with terminal or complex illnesses.

For individuals facing complex or terminal conditions, managing symptoms is often a crucial part of care. We are typically involved early on to assist with medication, provide practical support, and sometimes help with mobility and activities, ensuring individuals can live well at home for as long as possible. We recognise that this is a deeply emotional time for all involved, which is why we make a special effort to understand the needs of both the individual and their loved ones.

Our team of nurses and enhanced care support workers provides both comfort and clinical care, tailoring each care plan to meet the unique needs of the individual. We collaborate closely with families and other healthcare professionals to ensure continuous, compassionate support during this challenging period.

On behalf of myself and my sister, I would like to express my gratitude to Jay and his team for their efforts in organising care for our mother. Jay has been a godsend and has reassured us every step of the way with no question we may of had unanswered usually within minutes. Our carer (Ann) has been fantastic and her calm and caring nature has been incredible for mum totally putting our minds at ease.

Homecare First has proven very diligent and helpful in providing daily in-house care for my elderly mother. They have taken great pains to try and match the carers with my mum, taking into account her various needs and requirements. Also, they are readily contactable at any time of the day or night for any queries or additional assistance the family may require. The company fully engages with the family from the outset to provide a very professional level of care. I would highly recommend Homecare First to anyone seeking to provide care for a member of their family.

I would highly recommend using Homecare First for live in care. After using another provider, who were not very good at all!! It was such a relief finding a care provider that really go above and beyond. Mum is the happiest she has been in months and both Sarah and Jay have been there every step of the way, do they ever sleep! Thank you!

Following my centenarian mother’s fall and surgery for a broken hip it became sine qua non that further round-the-clock care had become an imperative. My mother’s needs had altered irrevocably as it was now clear she would not be able to walk again and although she already has daytime carers I needed to hurriedly find a carer agency to provide overnight cover at short notice. Fortunately Homecare First was able to fill the breach and everything was arranged post haste. As it has turned out the carer has shown herself to be highly competent and invested in my mother’s wellbeing. My brother and I are grateful to Homecare First for their exemplary service and to the carer for her dedication to looking after elderly mother.

Ms CF

I’ve had live-in care provided by Homecare First for a few months now. Having recently had bad experiences with other companies I was apprehensive at first, however, Homecare First were very reassuring and stressed to me that they would find the right carer and provide me with the appropriate support. The managers visited me at home, really listened and understood what I needed. Nothing has been too much bother and they are always readily contactable with any queries or concerns. I get on so well with my two carers and both are very competent, providing safe and effective care. I’m happier and less stressed than I’ve felt in quite some time.
